Le courroux d'un amant n'est point inexorable.
Ah! si tu la voyais, cette belle coupable,
Rougir et s'accuser, et se justifier,
Sans implorer sa grâce et sans s'humilier.
Pourtant de l'obtenir doucement inquiète,
Et, les cheveux épars, immobile, muette,
Les bras, la gorge nue, en un mol abandon,
Tourner sur toi des yeux qui demandent pardon!
Crois qu'abjurant soudain le reproche farouche,
Tes baisers porteraient son pardon sur sa bouche.

Andre Marie de Chenier

André Marie Chénier was a French poet of Greek and Franco-Levantine origin, associated with the events of the French Revolution of which he was a victim. His sensual, emotive poetry marks him as one of the precursors of the Romantic movement. His career was brought to an abrupt end when he was guillotined for supposed "crimes against the state", just three days before the end of the Reign of Terror.
