Analysis of The Intertwining of Good and Evil
Karl Constantine FOLKES 1935 (Portland)
In the world of living beings,
‘Good’ and ‘Evil’ are intertwined.
Each in intimate relationship with the other.
Each measured by the ‘strengths,’
And by the weaknesses of the other.
Each inclined unconsciously to the other’s nature.
To such extent that ‘Good’ taken to its extreme,
Converts ultimately into that which it disavows.
Revealing at its core its chimerical nature.
And ‘Evil’ pushed to its limits of exhaustion,
Will reveal within its core a common goodness.
This is the world of dualities in which humanity resides.
These things we do, waging war and finding in it something ‘good.’
Seeking peace while suppressing others’ goodwill.
And finding in that act a modicum of righteousness.
In the world of living human beings,
‘Good’ and ‘Evil are intertwined.
Each in intimate relationship with the other.
Always has been so, and always ever shall be so.

About this poem
While primarily for ethical motivations, we see good as far removed from evil, the overwhelming observation is that in the human experience of existence these two energies are active forces that from time to time transform into their opposite poles.
