Analysis of Silence

Robert T. Davenport 1979 (Newark, New Jersey)

Silence
By Robert T. Davenport

In the silence of a moment, when words hang in the air,
Sometimes it's best to hold your tongue, to show that you care.
For in the depths of knowing, when you're certain you're right,
Sometimes it's best to keep your peace, to avoid a needless fight.

The truth can be a burden, a weight upon your soul,
But speaking it aloud may not always make you whole.
For there are times when silence speaks louder than words,
When holding back can be the voice that's truly heard.

In the face of conflict, when tempers start to rise,
Sometimes it's best to step aside, to let anger subside.
For words can be like daggers, cutting deep and leaving scars,
And in the heat of the moment, they can take you too far.

So, take a breath and pause, before you let your voice be heard,
Consider the consequences, let wisdom be your guide.
For sometimes it's best to listen, to understand and empathize,
To bridge the gap between hearts, and find a compromise.

Silence can be powerful, a space for reflection and peace,
A chance to gather thoughts, to let emotions release.
For in the stillness of the moment, clarity can arise,
And sometimes it's best to hold your tongue, to let understanding thrive.

But silence should not be mistaken for weakness or defeat,
It's a choice made consciously, a way to find retreat.
For in the absence of words, actions can speak loud and clear,
And sometimes it's best to show your strength by what you don't say, my dear.

So, in those moments of certainty, when you know you're right,
Consider the power of silence, the impact it can ignite.
For sometimes it's best to hold your peace, to let wisdom guide your way,
And let your actions speak volumes, in the words you don't say.
