Analysis of If Love was Money, I'd be Broke

Harry C. Craft III 1959 (Phoenix, Arizona)

If Love was Money, I’d be Broke
What were those words you once spoke?
was our love true or was it just a joke?
well babe, if love was money, I’d be broke
picking myself up out of the ashes

The only remaining remnants
of love’s incendiary flames
always makes me wonder
how I get mixed up in these silly games

Lighting my cigarette for another toke, I think again
if love was money, I’d be broke
drivin’ in my truck on my way to work
tryin’ to make a buck
and taking it all without a quirk

Sometimes it’s like an old mystery movie
of dagger and cloak
because when I think of it
if love was money, I’d be broke
