Analysis of Voyage of Ataraxia: A Paean to Kanyakumari's Strand
I doth yearn to make a journey grand
To Kanyakumari's strand so fair and bright
And in that place, my pectoral organ
Shall be released from life's oppressive burden
The ocean's ataraxia shall be sought
To mend the fractures in my heart so sore
And with the beauty of the waves, I'll be bought
To see the splendor life does oft ignore
The pilgrimage shall be a path to peace
For in the ocean's depths, my mind shall cease
To dwell on woes that caused my heart to cease
And find in nature's beauty, true release
So let me make this journey, dear sweet fate
To find in ocean's depths, my life's true state.

About this poem
This sonnet employs a plethora of complex and elevated vocabulary to convey the speaker's desire to embark on a pilgrimage to the beach of Kanyakumari. The use of words such as "yearn," "journey grand," "pectoral organ," "ataraxia," and "pilgrimage" imbue the poem with a sense of grandeur and seriousness. The speaker wishes to escape the "oppressive burden" of existence and find solace in the beauty of the ocean. The ocean's ataraxia is sought as a means to mend the speaker's emotional fractures and attain a sense of peace. The speaker hopes that this pilgrimage will be a "path to peace" and that in the ocean's depths, the mind will cease to dwell on negative thoughts and instead find "true release" in nature's beauty. The final couplet ties the theme of the sonnet together by stating the speaker's desire to find their "life's true state" in the ocean's depths. The sonnet is also written in a traditional Shakespearean rhyme scheme, adding to its poetic elegance. more »
