Analysis of The Regular Rendezvous

Suhana Singh 2006 (Rajasthan)

The Regular Rendezvous

The sun was warm yet the wind chilly
Sufficed to say, a normal day in Montclair,
Elevator music played in the cafe
The smell of coffee danced in the air.

Among the lot of people striking small talk, sat six
None of them younger than thirty-five,
Yet the college circle still intact
Met every other Sunday to talk and forget about their lives.

An hour and a couple lattes later
One posed an unintentionally awkward question
"How are your families?", he asked
In the five pairs of eyes flickered immediate hesitation.

Two got divorced
One's brother died
One's kid moved out
One, due to financial crisis, on different couches spent every night.

Still they all smiled
Not a word uttered about how every one of them strived
Nothing changed and the perfunctory  group of six continued to meet every other Sunday to talk and forget about their lives.

About this poem

A group of six people meet up every couple sundays to talk and forget about their lives. They make materialistic and ostensible conversations, the day is turned into night, and they leave. This cycle has been continued for many years and it seemingly won't change for many years to come. The people will continue to meet up without really knowing each other. This shows the insipid repetition the artificial group has created to escape their problems.
