Analysis of "Pray for Me By Hershey"

Pray for me
By Hershey

A bright sunny day you can see
the fresh dandelions bursting into flurys
when a gust of wind blows them apart

The chipped paint from the walls that reminded you of
a sweeter time but saddens you because its getting old

The rosemary bushes that add a very minty smell to the air
Just like when grandma had those Peppermint Patty always fully stocked
Because she always loved seeing her grandchildren

The Fresh cut grass that makes your eyes red just letting you that it's okay to cry

The warm blissful air going through your fingers while driving in the passenger seat

The speedometer reading 75 miles per hour, the crisp air
Getting harder the breathe

Feeling like you are suffocating on your own breath
Feeling your heart drop to your feet

She says “pray for me”

but that's hard when your face to face with depression, walking on a line of anxiety and shaking hands with death

Looking up to the ceiling with your eyes shut trying hard back the tears
Your hands folded to send a letter to the heavens hoping he hears your calls

Pray for me

Rain thumbing against the windshield trying to beat god from making the last call

When will he listen, when will he touch the soul of this Lifeless body fighting to survive but in the end won't make it

Why keep praying for something that doesn't work
he’s failed you why pray for something that isn't gonna happen

She's a “prayer warrior” they say, but she's fighting a battle that she can't win

Now her kids have to look in the mirror knowing that the god that they believed in has taken away their own mother.

The women that gave you life, gave you hope, supported you your whole life now lost her life because it was god's plan, it was fate making the decisions, it was her time, it was wrong

Where are the angels
God's soldiers that are supposed to be protecting her, fighting the war against the demons that are whispering evil thoughts into her head
There was no thought in mind that you would take her from us
cursing her with a plague of sickness not to get better because she wasn't good enough for God's touch

Pray for Us

About this poem

It's about my great grandmother Hershey, she was always a person that would pray for you even if you had the common cold. This poem really shows how it felt to my family and her kids when going through grief.

Brayden Utsick

My name is Brayden Utsick, I'm 19 and currently live in Pennsylvania. I use poetry as an outlet for my emotions and to help with my dyslexia. I switch up my style of writing most times but I'm mostly a free verse poet but I've done some Romantic poetry and haikus. My main goal is to make poetry into more of a image that people can see and feel instead of having to look more into it. To be able to have someone feel your happiness or sadness just by reading a couple of stanzas, is amazing to me. I've been writing since I was 14 started with rhyme schemes and I just couldn't keep the energy that I wanted so my sophomore year my English teacher told me "to try free verse." It was a rough start but I wrote a poem called "asylum seeker" it described a man in a mental prison but the environment around him was getting darker and more twisted making the writing more intense. It was the start of me using my writing to mold my thoughts like clay in a sense. more…
