Analysis of BE A BETTER ME
SaintBobbie Jean Cawthon 0000 (Houston, Texas)
I am not the best that I can be.
I can be a better me.
A better reader, gonna be a better thinker, writer
I'm changing my wills to build my skills.
To better see, who I am and who I want to be.
Gonna be a better me than I used to be...
You'll see I am not a dummy.
I'm me...
...Cool, smooth, I've got the tools to walk by the rules.
I'm sophisticated, educated, and non-archaic.
Folks notice me; respect me, see belief in me.
They know I'm not a fool, cause I go to school.
I play tennis, ride 'me' bike to 'bus', and I comb my hair.
Do you see what I wear? I can go any and everywhere,
But I don't dare. I'm still in school,
learning how to share and be a better me.
I know who I am. I don't do drugs
Don't fight with the FUZZ...
Drink Alcohol, nor hide under the rugs with thugs,
Don't sleep in the parks, or on the side
of the curb's curves,
Don't ride the rules nor rob the schools, I'm Made to be ~A BETTER ME.~

About this poem
Written for a pilot school program designed completely for 5th GRADE TRUANTS. They had to learn and appreciate themselves. Thus, they were given another opportunity to be changed. I was assigned to teach 5th graders who had run away 4 different instructors during the first half of school year. However, they were challenged to new heights in 1993-1994 school year as they had to listen to me recite this poem. It was a moment of a continuous chaotic day; I had almost given up. There unbelievable conduct was treacherous. Then a voice from beyond the sky, spoke. This poem I uttered! Everything changed, even me. I realized that I too could be a Better Me. They learned to think differently about themselves. They were told to think, say, and write these words... Some even memorized the poem. THE WORD WORKED (ref. Romans 12:1-2 KJV) more »
