Analysis of Left Deaf
John Jessup Kennan 1953 (Pomona)
Thunder is a memory's voice
A distant diplomatic noise
Explaining in faraway terms
Why I shouldn't be disgusted
You speak in such heavenly tones
An echo through my empty bones
As if credibility remained
With proof you could be trusted
I already felt your lightning, dear
Is it really any wonder
The fires you brought, the scars you wrought
Leave me deaf to thunder?
The storm after the calm has passed
And now the calm returns at last
From the teeth of a storm that seemed
A gentle sacred rain at first
Wreckage I wish not to survey
But survey it I will anyway
Damage brought by monsoon rains
Overkill me as I die of thirst
I've already felt your lightning, dear
Is it really any wonder
The fires you brought, the scars you wrought
Leave me deaf to thunder?
