Taking my Power Back (For my Bullies)

Elysia Laidlaw 2000 (Birmingham)

For years,
I could never fathom
your hatred towards me.
You made the air smell like sulphur,
And my heart bleed.
But I gave you that power,
But now I’m taking my power back.

For years,
After leaving school
I didn’t recognize my reflection
In the mirror,
I didn’t feel like ‘me’ anymore,
I hated who I was
Because of you.

I gave you my power. I gave you my strength.
I gave you the power to kick me down.
I gave you my spirit,
I gave you my confidence
I gave you my heart
On a silver platter.

I wish I hadn’t given you the power
To bully me.
I wish I found my voice,
And stood up to you.
I wish I hadn’t given you the power.
But I’m taking my power back.

I’m taking my power back
Because I am destined for greatness
The names you called me held no substance.
Weightless
Tasteless
Outrageous.

For years,
I could never fathom
your hatred towards me.
You made the air smell like sulphur,
And my heart bleed.
But I gave you that power,
But now I’m taking my power back
