Dreamcatcher
The legend was born to my people
so many moons ago
most only know part of the story
there's so much more to know.
Long before the white man
ever came to this land
everything we needed
we had to make by hand.
The story is told of a shaman
while on a vision quest
was given the first Dreamcatcher
by the old woman in the west.
The hoop she said is the circle of life
and should always be held sacred
it should always be hung in front of the lodge
before you go to bed.
The webbing will protect the lodge
and all that dwell inside
and every time you make one
you must make it with great pride.
The feathers of an owl
will keep mice and snakes away
the beads amongst the webbing
will keep evil spirits at bay.
The center is most important
hang your strongest totem there
be it the feather of an eagle
or even the claw of a bear.
For that is where your life force flows
from this world to the next
your totem will always bring you back
so you won't get caught in the web.
Hang it over the little ones
to occupy their mind
it will let you get your work done
and give you some free time.
The white man thinks it's just for catching dreams
that's what he tells to sell it
But it does much more than catch bad dreams
it also guides your spirit.
