The Intersection

Deborah Wiederhold 1967 (Sacramento)

I see the wrinkled face
Of the man right there
At the stop light - dancing
With grayish beard and hair
I don't know why he's dancing
In his faded jeans
What song is propelling him
As he begs for change?
My eyes don't quite meet his
I should give as per my Lord
But you see I've got priorities
Next time I'll find some quarters
Tomorrow dawns and they all take shifts
I wonder who will be there?
Will it be the woman
With the matted yellow hair?
They need food but also probably
Spend it on booze to dull the pain
Of a lifetime on a street corner
Come summer, sleet, or rain.
