L’Horreur et le Dégoût lui bavaient leur poison
Quand la Vieille emmenait sa Manon toute pâle,
Car, un instant après, derrière la cloison,
Il entendait deux voix suffoquer dans un râle.
Ainsi donc ! grinçait-il, le voilà ton destin :
Jusqu’à ce que la mort t’arrache au dispensaire,
Tu pourriras ton cœur dans l’ennui libertin
Et tu vendras ton corps attendu par l’ulcère !
Et moi, j’irais toujours, sans trêve à mes tourments,
Cogner ma jalousie à ton peuple d’amants !
Non ! je hais ta jeunesse et je maudis tes charmes !
Mais il avait pitié de ses pauvres amours
Quand il voyait entrer par la porte en velours
Une apparition ruisselante de larmes.
