Le petit lièvre
Maurice Rollinat 1846 (Châteauroux) – 1903 (Ivry-sur-Seine)
Brusque, avec un frisson
De frayeur et de fièvre,
On voit le petit lièvre
S'échapper du buisson.
Ni mouche ni pinson ;
Ni pâtre avec sa chèvre,
La chanson
Sur la lèvre.
Tremblant au moindre accroc,
La barbe hérissée
Et l'oreille dressée,
Le timide levraut
Part et se risque au trot,
Car l'aube nuancée
N'est pas trop
Avancée.
N'entend-il pas quelqu'un ?
Non ! ce n'est que la brise
Qui caresse et qui grise
Son petit corps à jeun.
Et dans le taillis brun
Le fou s'aromatise
Au parfum
Du cytise.
Dans le matin pâlot,
Leste et troussant sa queue,
Il fait plus d'une lieue
D'un seul trait, au galop.
Il s'arrête au solo
Du joli hoche-queue,
Près de l'eau
Verte et bleue.
Terrains mous, terrains durs,
En tout lieu son pied trotte :
Et poudreux, plein de crotte,
Ce rôdeur des blés mûrs
Hante les trous obscurs
Où la source chevrote,
Les vieux murs
Et la grotte.
L'aube suspend ses pleurs
Au treillis des barrières,
Et sur l'eau des carrières
Fait flotter ses couleurs.
Et les bois roucouleurs,
L'herbe des fondrières
Et les fleurs
Des clairières,
L'if qui se rabougrit,
Le roc vêtu d'ouate
Où le genêt s'emboîte,
La forêt qui maigrit,
La mare qui tarit,
L'ornière creuse et moite :
Tout sourit
Et miroite.
Et dans le champ vermeil
Où s'épuise la sève,
Le lièvre blotti rêve
D'un laurier sans pareil ;
Et toujours en éveil
Il renifle sans trêve
Au soleil
Qui se lève.
