PRAYERS OF A VET

PRAYERS OF A VET

God help me forget my yesterday
Help me to remember how to pray
God I'm there fighting them still
Peace never quite seems real
I fear the sounds as rounds go off
I smell the smoke and start to cough
God here I am on my knees
Help me believe in peace

It's been oh such a long time ago
But every single night my mind has to go
I can't go on, can't go back, it's a riddle
That the vet lives forever in the middle
God help me remember how to pray
Maybe I should've died that day
Cause it seems to me only dead are free
That's the only peace God, I'll  ever see

Take me back God I humbly pray
Back to the days before yesterday
Cause I can't remember, can't forget
Lost in the streets, another damned vet
Show me how to get past the pain
That threatens the valor we gain
Is there only honor in a brave death
That leaves the brothers all bereft?

Lord too many soldiers ive seen fall
After the bugles silenced their call
Is there a way to unsee what we saw
Or is our battle forever our law?
Jesus teach me to see you once again
Or else my battle truly won't end
Let my old self fall as in peace I arise
Let the battle end…as I shut my eyes
Amen
