Grandpa's Legacy
Robert Rowe 1967 (Agana, Guam)
When I was a child little more than three
My grandpa would set me upon his knee
And tell me stories of the world he saw
While wide eyed I’d listen, mind filled with awe.
His heroes were larger than life he knew
But he swore that all his stories were true.
My innocent mind accepted his word
Though his tales would sometimes be so absurd.
I soon grew too big to sit on his knee
Yet his tales never stopped int’resting me
He roams heaven now with his fairy tale crew
His yarn-spinning days are long gone and through.
Yet his tales live on ‘cause I’ll ne’er forget
Days of sitting on his lap, you can bet.
Or most of all, the sparkle in his eye
From my laughing so hard that I would cry.
I pray that someday, when I’m eighty-three
My grandchild will sit there upon my knee
While I tell stories of the world I saw
And wide-eyed he’ll listen, mind filled with awe.
About this poem
This poem was inspired by not just my own grandfather but also by a painting I once saw of a boy sitting on his grandfather's lap laughing. I cannot find that painting anywhere, but it is still etched into my mind. It is one of the few poems I have had published.
