"TBIs and the Symphony of Neurons"

Destiny Hanson 1998 (Duluth, Minnesota)

Psychologically speaking,
Traumatic brain injuries
Change who you are
In its entirety.

The brain is who we are;
We are just meat suits -
With an electrical grid,
Full of flashing sparks.

A symphony of neurons -
Exploding and connecting,
Constantly making
New discoveries.

Memories, fleeting -
Trauma kills overtime -
As we exist
In this life.

Emotions are
Like wildfire;
It is hard to
Control emotions
With my TBI.

I have a TBI;
I got it at
3 years old.
How I got it
Was by jumping
On the bed,
And cracking
My head open.

My mind works
Like a kaleidoscope;
I see things in
Black and gray,
But I take in
So much information
It's not even funny.

Some people say
TBIs are like
"Broken glass"
But me and
The rest of my friends
Who have TBIs
Are not broken.

Our identities shifted
Due to everything
That gone on.

Traumatic brain injuries
Shifts everything
At once.

Subconsciously,
We stumble
Into
Chaos.

You would
Be foolish
To think
Our brains
Are
Immutable.

Identities change
Overtime -
They're fluid,
Much like space.

We are
More than chaos,
We are
The music.

We are
Who we are
At the end
Of the day.

About this poem

All about my traumatic brain injury, we are not broken; we are the music and we are chaos.

Destiny Hanson

Hi! I actually go by a completely different name than my birth name but it's fine; I'm a disabled, nonbinary and queer af person who specialized in free verse poetry. It seems as though I've been writing in free verse my whole life without knowing until more recently, and that's the annoying part. I live in a group home, planning on going to college to learn more poetic forms on top of my free verse and words so I can get better at my proses and poetry. I LOVE Pokemon, I LOVE video games, i LOVE rock music and I absolutely love a lot of different things. I go under the name of "The Spiteful Poet" on Twitter and Facebook - because I have a lot of fire and am incredibly spiteful towards existence currently, and "Felix Wise" for my chosen name as a nonbinary person. Please respect my chosen name - there's a special meaning behind why I chose my name, and a story. I also go under the pen name of "Hydri", for reasons I will not specify to anyone unless the time comes to it, as someone with an esoteric nature. I run Actually Autistic Voices and The Neurodivergent Outlaw on Facebook, pages I created myself but I'm struggling keeping up with all of my social media activities, especially trying to shift into other things than social media even though I write poetry with a keyboard, not pencil and pen. I am a philosopher and I run information influx - an overload of information, my philosophy is esotericism. If you ever have any questions please let me know, I'm happy to educate on anything if my memory permits! more…
