Until I See You Again

Not a day has passed by that I haven’t thought about you,
And of the void you’ve left behind in that wooden church pew.
You left so suddenly and in the blink of an eye,
The news came as a shock; we still don’t understand why.
Truth is, though, you’ve gone home to a much better place;
When you took your last breath and looked upon your Master’s face.
The days to come won’t be easy; some may say they’ll be filled with grief;
But at your request, I’ll do my best to keep it brief.
For I know what awaits me when it’s my turn to go;
I’ll join you in Heaven to walk on those streets of gold.
What a time we’ll have when that moment is here;
As my faith will have helped me conquer my biggest fear.
Thank you for the times we spent together these last few years;
But for now I must go and wipe away these tears.
Until I see you again, go enjoy all of the fun to be had;
And say hello to those gone on before; don’t forget to hug your mom and dad.

About this poem

On January 9, 2024, I experienced one of the worst days of my life: the death of my grandfather. He was always the rock of our family. He was the person we went to for advice about all things great and small and he encouraged us every step of the way. He was truly the patriarch of our family and I wrote this in his honor. Until I see him again, I’ll keep on doing what he would have wanted me to do.
