Lonely woods

This trail is carved coarsely now
through these lonely woods.
Just one or two flowers so far
but the bees don't know of them.
Flies and mosquitoes hover in nearby shadows.
If I don't breathe, will they hover by?

Oh, to fly like a fire-red leaf in this warm breeze!
Spinning round and round without intent,
with hundreds of others flying just the same.
And they never know they are falling--
yet somehow smiling they let go.
