Simplicity
Simplicity
Let us not complicate simplicity,
Nor allow the mavens of manipulation to appropriate it
In order to sell us cars, candy, or “lifestyles”;
Let us not overanalyze the concept,
Nor allow it to become fashionable, cool or chic,
One more thing to inflate our egos and deflate our wallets:
Remembering that it’s not one more consumer product,
But rather a spiritual approach we must humbly seek.
Let us not cheapen simplicity,
Nor allow it to be consigned to the dusty attics of history
Along with hula hoops, pet rocks, and Nehru jackets:
Let us remove it from the arena of fads and fancies,
Not allowing it to become another self-help program,
Requiring the expert guidance of gurus, preachers, or doctors,
Remembering that their credentials don’t make them wise,
Nor give the slightest indication that they give a damn.
Let us not idolize simplicity,
Nor expect it to be the panacea for all of our failings and woes,
Only to go the way of green stamps, Edsels, and leisure suits,
Let us not discard the principles and practice of frugal living
When they don’t yield nirvana, magical miracle cures or wealth:
Persevering in the direction of wholeness, harmony, and abundance,
Remembering that these things are too important to ignore and that
Peace won’t occur without generosity and subordination of self.
Let us embrace simplicity
In imitation of Christ and in emulation of many wise and prudent folk
Who saw that money can’t buy happiness, serenity, or salvation,
Let us stop trying to fill that aching emptiness and bottomless yearning
With stuff, stop trying to satisfy ourselves with empty calories of clutter,
Stripping the earth in our desperate pursuit of soul-numbing affluence,
Remember the life our Lord and Savior chose: He who could have
“Had it all”, lived a life of bare essentials and simplicity utter.
