Grief
It has the power to destroy you
Like an unexpected hurricane
The whirlwind of emotions you’ll go through
They say it’ll let up one day
It has the power to end relationships
From friends, family and partners
The ones that were nurtured before all of this
It can keep you locked in a mind prison cell
Torturing you in ways you never imagined
The pain is crippling like a scene from hell
You become your own assassin
It can take your job and your money
It can literally leave you with nothing
The way I’m not kidding isn’t funny
Yet grief comes from love, isn’t that something
Grief isn’t all tears and sadness
It’s being around but not being present
It’s irrational, irritable, and reckless
It’s basically everything but pleasant
Grief isn’t always physically seen
It’s an emotional battle in the mind
It may not even disrupt their routine
It is their pain they attempt to hide
Grief comes in all forms
It comes in different times
It’ll come and go, it’s an emotional ride
Testing patience and testing love
It won’t be easy, in fact it’ll be rough
About this poem
I wrote this about 2 months after my Mom went to her forever home and writing has been my outlet and for 2 months I had lost my words. Countless sleepless nights led me to this.
