The World's Greatest

The World’s Greatest
Who are some of the greatest people we know?
And are their stories more than what we’re told?
People always view me as someone who can take on the whole world, but they don’t know.
They don’t know that there are many seeds of fear, doubt and hesitation sowed.
For surely Martin Luther had nightmares before he had a dream
And Nanny had days when she would pray for solitude no matter how tough she seemed.
Harriet would’ve loved for someone to see her as a person rather than the slaves she set free.
And Miss Bennet was more than an influential poet , but a person who went through hardships just like you and me.

Heroes are often known for their sacrifice
No one knows the battle they faced to become someone so volatile.
No one knew that Michael Luther King was arrested more than twenty five times
Through his parades and civil marches he was nearly assassinated by a blade.
And Nanny's life was a mystery that caused everyone to wonder
But who knew that Nanny was injured several times and got hurt in several fights.
And even though Nanny was loved by many, in many people she found hate.
And who knew that Harriet Tubman, The Moses of her people had severe health issues where she would have sudden convulsions.
Or that she was hit in the head by an iron.
They only knew that she persevered and went through the fire.
They believed she was self made
Miss Louise Bennet Coverly was a household name, famous for her patois and her fame
News of her talent grew and spread
But no one knew that she had to take care of her sick husband before he was dead.

The World’s greatest heroes struggled too
They had their hard times and weaknesses too
They were known for their glory and accomplishments
But they worked hard
To be glorious men and women.

About this poem

This poem aims to speak and highlight the human nature of heroes we hold dear. And give a slight perspective of what was going on in their lives. This poem shows us the hero and not what they've done.
