Chiming Lies: Christ's Silent Lament
They say we are taking Christ out of Christmas
But they already took Christ out of Christianity
The hollow bells now only ring with promises of gifts
While compassion and goodwill lie forgotten under the tree
Love they profess but only for those within their circle
Leaving all others outcast into the winter chill
Their savior’s words of kindness they no longer recall
His lessons of mercy now lost, abandoned, nil
The babe born in a manger they pay lip service to
Yet do not feed the hungry child shivering in the street
Their prayers profess concern for humankind’s woes
But their actions sow discord, separation and deceit
Faith they proclaim steadfastly every Sunday morn
Yet prey upon the hopes of the desperate and forlorn
They honor his name but not his message of peace
Turning words of fellowship into cries for war’s release
His cradle they kneel before with heads bent in prayer
Then board warships and load bombers without care
The meek shall inherit has no meaning to their mind
As they hoard power, crushing all gentle and kind
His command to love thy neighbor as oneself
Matters not if that neighbor has another faith
Bigotry and prejudice they easily shelve
When wearing the mask of piety and grace
But darkness seeps from their smiling facade
Poisoning hope and enshrining the facade
In his name they judge and shun their fellow beings
Leaving compassion behind, nursing hatred’s stings
He embraced society’s outcasts with open arms
They in his name now treat them as those who cause harm
He dared overturn corruption in holy temples
Now in temples they nurture corruption’s own roots
Upon the cross a sacrifice for humankind’s sin
Yet sin flourishes still in hearts ruled by pride
His resurrection promised life anew could begin
But rebirth eludes those by hatred’s storms tossed and tried
They honor the teacher but not the lessons he gave
Praising his name but not the truths he did save
His light they extol but choose shadow’s cold refrain
Speaking love while sowing doubt, judgment and pain
He revealed humanity’s intrinsic divine worth
They claim only a chosen few have value on this earth
His vision was of unity between all people and races
Theirs is of walls, borders, binary rules and set places
His revolution was of the soul, not steel and blood
Theirs seeks control, dominance, the crush of the crowd
He cleansed conscience, leaving change to each heart
They seek to impose their own will, playing power’s part
He guided from within, aligning to each soul’s own path
They demand rigid adherence, or else face their wrath
His rule was service, lifting others up from despair
Theirs is of thrones above with no room for those who dare
Dream of more than scraps from the powerful’s bulging store
His flock was all people, none turned from his open door
Theirs shut out those deemed sinful, impure, or strange
His kingdom encompassed the sweep of humanity’s range
He reached out a hand to the shunned and reviled
They in his name shun and exile, playing judge in his style
He tore through temple curtains, revealing holy space
While they now stand guard at curtains, permitting none to grace
The truth he revealed, oneness beneath all illusion’s lies
They distort into “us” and “them”, for their own power’s rise
The new covenant he made was of unconditional love
While they demand obedience to claim blessings from above
His revolution overturned the creed of an eye for an eye
They now cry heresy if that old order you now deny
He jubilantly declared the kingdom of heaven is within
They place it after death, granting them power over all beings
His doctrine of freedom lit souls with inner light
Their doctrines impose blindness, “follow us into the night”
Divinity ours to claim, he did teach and show
They claim divinity only for themselves, hiding light below
Christ they may speak of, but his truth they do undo
Speaking love, yet sowing fear between me and you
His vision did encompass humanity in its fullness
Theirs divides and fragments, each protecting their own “rightness”
He dissolved the chains of each caste, race and creed
They forge new chains claiming sanctification from their own greed
His liberation was from guilt, doubt and mortal decay
Their creed enslaves hearts and minds in concepts that betray
His resurrection conquered our deepest existential dread
Their kingdom offers only comfort when tomorrow we are dead
Healing he did bring to those aching and afflicted in soul
They see only wounds to avenge, transgressions to pay and toll
Christ they exalt with loud voices in crowded temples and squares
Yet fail to live his truth with courage, dissolving all fears
He awakened light in all, none were damned, all were free
They claim awakening for themselves, demanding loyalty and fee
His revolution lives on beyond any one credo or clan
Its unfolding truth, love and wisdom accessible to every woman and man
So at this season of soft lights and melodies sublime
Let us free Christ from church, dogma and construed crime
And honor the babe born humble with the highest love
By uplifting humanity with faith cast from above
Let healing, hope and reconciliation be gifts we exchange
As we quiet our minds, allowing true light to rearrange
The luminous consciousness that Christ did reveal and embody
Cannot be contained by any one form, icon or deity
It shines forth from within every being, a seed waiting to flower
In infinite diversity, at this most abundant hour
So let us open our hearts, flinging judgement and fear aside
Embracing peace, truth and unending love, whatever may betide
For Christ’s timeless message resounds in each passing age
Calling us to live fully, our highest dreams to engage
To transform humanity’s sorrow into abounding joy
And awaken our divine potential without limit or alloy
The season’s sparkling lights beckon, now boldly step through
To the kingdom promised, ever waiting patiently for you.

About this poem
The poem beautifully dissects the paradox between the essence of Christ's teachings and the divergence in practice within organized Christianity. It portrays the contrast between the teachings of love, compassion, and unity advocated by Christ and the discord, prejudice, and selective adherence to these ideals within institutionalized religious structures. It challenges the superficial celebration of Christ during Christmas while urging for a deeper understanding and application of his profound message of love and unity among all humanity, advocating for a liberated and inclusive interpretation of Christ's timeless teachings. more »
