Death of a Warrior
In the morning
The kingdom gathered
To witness the birth
Of a young princess.
Gleeful and optimistic
She came,
Ready to welcome the world with a smile.
In the darkness
There loomed
The shadow of fate, unknown.
Soon she met
The fear that haunts us all.
The face of Death,
She soon beheld,
Waiting to strike her down.
Into this darkness
She dove,
Weapon in hand
And ready to face her doom.
Long and hard
The battle she fought.
Surrender she gave no thought.
It seemed that she had won
When at last the demon fell.
The kingdom cheered
At sight of her success.
Then Death arose
And charged at her from behind.
Before she knew what had happened
The sword of Death
Struck her to the ground.
The kingdom was silent
For they feared the worst.
Inspired by their silence,
She felt she could succeed.
Again, she rose,
Feeling stronger than before,
But, oh had she riaen a minute sooner
For the sword of Death came around again
And smote her across the chest.
Before the day was done,
She drew her final breath.
Though she has gone,
Her memory loves forever
And whenever they are faced with hardship
They remember
The courage of tye young princess,
For it is through her memory
That the gain the courage to go on.
About this poem
In the late 1990s, I was touched by a news report about a little girl who passed away from cancer. This poem was a tribute to her.
