It’s a Long Way Back

It’s a long way
Back from the gutter
And, take it from me,
It aint all peaches and butter:

There will be times

When you slip and slide,
Days when you stumble,
Awful moments when
You can hear hell rumble.

There will be people

Who’ll give you no quarter,
Show you no pity,
You’ll see the cold
And cruel side of the city.

There will be places

Where memories haunt
And gray ghosts linger,
You’ll recollect misery like
Some familiar old singer.

There will be shadows,
There will be doubts,
There will be questions
As to what this is all about…

It’s a long way
Back from the shit,
But you can travel it all
If you simply don’t quit.
