C’est un jour dont le soir a la beauté d’un songe,
Tant l’air que l’on respire est pur en ces beaux lieux ;
Et, sous le doigt levé du Temps silencieux,
La lumière s’attarde et l’heure se prolonge...
Gardes-en longuement la mémoire en tes yeux.
Si la source a la voix de sa Nymphe limpide,
Le frêne sous l’écorce étire son Sylvain :
Un lent souffle palpite au feuillage incertain ;
Le ruisseau qui s’esquive est comme un pas rapide,
Et, nocturne, le bois va s’éveiller divin !
Mais nous, nous n’avons pas en cette nuit mortelle
Qui déjà nous entoure et qui rampe à nos pieds
De fontaine éloquente et de dieux forestiers ;
Nous avons peur de l’ombre, et nous redoutons d’elle
L’impassible sommeil qui nous prend tout entiers.
