FREEDOM ON A FLAT EARTH
Societal rules we succumb to
Imprison us in a rotating sphere,
A hierarchy of gender surviving and thriving
Through the impersonation of power,
Blindingly clear like the cheap wool we weave into chafing blindfolds -
Marketed as ethical pure silk and
Tenderly tied over our eyes.
When the beauty standard shifts your silk must be pink,
Be the black sheep if you chose to disobey,
Free will is real, if that’s the game you want to play.
Why cry when you lose, simply replace the wool over your eyes with baby blue silk,
You won’t feel it at all - it’s pure and ethical,
Splash your itching face quickly in the sink,
It will permanently act as a quick fix to that hypothetical.
Societal rules we succumb to
Imprison us in a rotating sphere,
Some people escaped; man went to the moon,
A harsh rocky surface, an even smaller sphere,
Far out in space untouched by man’s hand,
A planet without hierarchical imprisonment -
The moon free from inequality and prejudice:
Yet gravity is betraying freedom, keeping us all bound.
You can buy some moon dust in preparation for your great escape,
Unless you use tampons, there’s gravity in space.
Wear the moon dust in a necklace - adorn your neck with the facade of fate;
A gift from a man to permanently wear,
His generosity bottomless, clearly written by a woman - a man of real worth,
A reminder you will escape the societal rules we succumb too.
Freedom for all who live on this flat earth.
About this poem
I wrote this poem as a critique to both the patriarchy and society through a satirical lens. The poem is filled with irony and challenges the 'status quo', delineating the absence of freedom, especially for women.
