From Ashes to Steel
Charley Price 1984 (Idaho)
At the top of our world once stood two mighty towers,
But your wicked raze revealed foolish and unholy powers.
Our broken but humble sky still remains bruised,
So your cruelty and violence will not be excused.
We rebuilt this sacred nation and our Empire State,
Because our courage and virtue will never deteriorate.
Our once empty ground now stands tall and loud,
And we remain hopeful, unshaken, and proud.
Your blinding fury blazed our columns and the lives that still heal,
But we took back our honor when we turned ashes back into steel.
You sealed your own fate to send our people to heaven,
But we let go of hate, because we forgive, and never forget our 9/11.
About this poem
This poem was written by me to commemorate this years 22nd anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that devastated our nation all the way down to the core of our planet. It shows that though we were slightly unhinged by a sudden and violent awakening, we still rebuilt our world and remain stronger than ever. For those of us who remember exactly where we were that Tuesday morning, and even those who don’t, and even those who were not yet born—or even those who are still not yet born—we have to remember to stand strong and proud for our nation and never forget that relentless morning that shook our hearts but not our nerves. Never forget! more »
