Recurring Echoes of New Year's Love

Lani Kirby 2007 (south Australia)

Since we were kids, I've held this love so true,
When you began to like me back, my heart soared anew.
Yet your actions mystify, year after year,
New Year's arrives, we draw near.

Together we laugh, you indulge and flirt,
Confessing your love, my heart lifts from the dirt.
But morning brings clarity, sober and cold,
You vanish, like a story untold.

Why this cycle, I cannot comprehend,
Do you truly want me, or is it just pretend?
Do drunk words unveil thoughts concealed?
Or is my love for you, still revealed?

Am I not enough for your heart's embrace,
Without the haze of alcohol's grace?
Do you desire more than what I am?
Do you long for me, or is that a sham?

Entangled in feelings, attached to your name,
You have a girlfriend, yet I'm not the same.
We both know the future, as New Year draws near,
She'll fade, you'll return, that much is clear.
