I’m Sorry
A white collared button down shirt with the top button undone to show off the dangling fluorescent crescent. Proper and whimsical. Taking wide jolly strides she’s the first of her friends at the table. Flowing conversations, nodding heads, the corners of her mouth reaching for the yellow stained ceiling, cheeks tickle me pink, as the lush spills in to her eyes making them twinkle.
A few hours pass, a few more drinks swapped between hands like their swapping stories and the night goes on smoothly. Until, his voice cut the air like a knife. Howling like a wolf in heat, his face turns red with frustration. She hasn't said much of a word the entire time, she just wants to enjoy the company. "I feel used," he sobs as he clutches the pendant on her chest. She needs to speak, but what was once air is now smoke and the silence seems too suffocating as one, two, three seconds pass without a word.
Her shoulders, now reaching for the tops of her ears. Bulging brown eyes stare at the floor with her teeth pressed creating valleys on her lips, he continues to bark. Waving his arms in the air like a samurai. He’s so drunk he doesn’t realize he’s yelling. “I feel so used,” he cries. Holding back and trying to hide in the cracks of the couch her eyes dart left, then right, left, then right. Without a word she takes off for the door, with that same wide jolly stride leaving behind a lit screen to read, “I’m sorry”.
