Who Am I?
Lawrence S. Pertillar 1947 (Connecticut)
Who am I?
To keep profiled?
And kept to identify?
At what time of day,
Would you prefer I say?
Morning, noon or night?
If I stayed the same way,
Without a change made...
Still you will insist,
My actions to perform them...
Are different to be recognized.
Yet who I am,
To have become the me to be...
Is a process of blooming.
From a child to adult.
And this to do shouldn't be a mystery.
Although I will admit,
Never before had I done this to witness.
Or expect to be questioned,
As to why I am who I am...
Not to remember,
A childhood and games with you I played.
As if at my age,
And yours as well...
You expect me to have total recall.
Living to do nothing else at all,
But sit.
Reminiscing a childhood.
Gone to no longer exist.
While you attempt with time to waste.
Hoping I would lie and deny,
How well you look to have aged gracefully.
But the truth and reality I am blessed to live,
These days?
There is nothing left of our youthful days,
Neither one us could claim to say...
Is still in our minds.
When I know in my own mind,
I'm trying to remember...
Who I was and what I did to do yesterday.
Then to thank God for helping me,
Find my door keys.
In my hand to wonder,
Who is shaking them to get my attention!
'Will you stop exaggerating!'
Exaggerating?
When you called my name,
What then did you see me do?
'Well...
You did look around.
To see who I was talking to.
And I laughed thinking you were joking!'
Oh?
Well...
The joke is on you.
Since I still don't remember you at all.
Or the elementary school we attended,
'I am surprised.
You haven't changed at all!'
Have you tried rushing to the bathroom,
With the lights out?
Hoping to find it.
Before you mistake the bathtub,
For the toilet?
'LOL...
Stop lieing.
That did not happen.'
Oh?
Check this out.
I once took my dentures out to brush them.
The upper one.
My lower teeth are mine.
Anyhow...
And for whatever the reason,
They ended up in the refrigerator.
Of all places.
I finally found them.
Next to the chicken.
When I decided it probably would be easier,
If I made chicken soup to eat.
'I gotta go.'
Don't do it here.
Or ask me to assist you.
You old folks always seeking companionship!
And...
It doesn't matter who it is,
When that need arrives.
Trust me.
If you gotta go.
Do it alone.
Don't embarrass yourself.
'Yep.
Good advice.
You haven't changed.'
Now?
I keep the bathroom light on.
'What?'
