So, stay
So, Stay
Whenever I share
The pieces of me -
The dark, twisty bits
That show the weaknesses
In my armour
And expose my fragile heart,
I'll push.
I'll push you away.
'Cause when I feel vulnerable
I'll recede into the dark,
Haunted woods of my soul,
Where the monsters,
Ghouls and ghosts live.
I'll run and hide
And put up walls
And reinforce them.
Always thicker.
Always stronger.
I call it strength,
But it's fear.
It's easier to run
Than let someone see you...
The dark, twisty bits.
The monsters, ghouls and ghosts.
So, stay.
I push. You stay.
Fight for me
So I stop fighting myself.
About this poem
Homework from my counsellor to identify why I was having such a hard time dating after my marriage ended, "So, stay" is the first in a series of poems where I reflect on my relationship trauma after being married to a narcissist for over a decade and how that has effected my future relationships. The behaviours, mannerisms and thought processes that went into me successfully sabotaging all dates with good men was a nuanced waltz I wasn't even aware I was doing. After 13 years of never feeling good enough I was left broken, unsure of who I was or how I accept and move on from all the torment I had experienced. Reflecting on myself as the subject and how MY experiences devastated but shaped me was the first step to recognizing what I was doing to keep vulnerability and meaningful connection at bay and how I started working on changing that. more »
