Sister's Boyfriend.

No traces of you remain
In our home, your photos are removed from their frames, they are replaced with
Photos of the family dog
We dare not mention your name
In case it reminds her of the pain that your absence has caused
You were a brother to me, the brother that I never had until I met you
You helped me with my homework, you laughed at all of my jokes.
I had imagined being a bridesmaid at your wedding, a godmother to your sons.
And just like that, you are not here. We pretend to move on, and pretend that you never were.
I have no choice but to accept that I will never see you again.

About this poem

My sister just unexpectedly broke up with her boyfriend of 10 years. She is now moving back home from across the country. I had met him when I was 10, and he watched me grow up. I wrote this poem to express how strange the experience is, of losing someone you are close to and being forced to pretend that they never existed. This is my first proper poem.
