Serpents and Doves

Carmi Philander 2006 (Cape Town)

The world has become so dark and twisted
That temptations are barely resisted
That people clap their hands
Over their ears
So they don't have to hear
About salvation and repentance
The cross fades into a distance
As we spit on its existence

The Gospel is turning
Into a fairytale
The Word is becoming
Old and stale

We've obscured the line
Between wrong and right
We've tainted our eyes
With glacé lies

That threadbare border
Between good and evil
Has blurred so much
That one cannot see
The difference between
Hate and love
Or serpents and doves
