Numbers

Oh, the numbers of months when we're in the womb,
Till the date our life takes on this earth to assume,
Oh, the numbers we learn on our fingers and toes,
And we try to make music wherever we go.

The number of sheep before sleep in our beds,
And sugar plum fairies dance in our heads,
Oh, the numbers that catalogue Bible verses,
Memorized so we are sure God can find us.

The number of the hard earned salary we pay
For mortgage, utilities, and food for the day.
Oh, the number of times we wish we had the time
To turn back the clock and start over the climb.

Oh, the number we pledged to our Alma Mater
For giving us the means to live how we want to
Oh, the number of children we pray someday
Will care for us when our strength fades away.

Oh, the number of cell phones we have on one plan,
One for the office and one for the fam,
Oh, the secret social security one,
That we promise not to reveal or divulge,

Oh, the number of channels on cable TV
For here and back to uncertainty,
Oh, the number of candles on birthday cakes that
Symbolize victory and sometimes heartache,

Oh, number the body count now in Ukraine,
The world prays for peace.  War we cannot sustain.
Number the years of love, death, and mirth
Until we sleep finally under the earth.
