I Had to Be Told

I had to be told
when I was young
to leave a healing wound alone
stop picking at it

It would never heal
they said
if I kept undoing the progress
if I didn’t let the healthy skin come in

It’ll leave a scar
they said
it’ll be permanent
it will never go away

Like a little kid
I didn’t listen
and I kept picking
until there was nothing left

Until there were only scars

About this poem

I wrote this poem because I think scars are very special. Some people view them as imperfections, but they're important, a reminder of what you endured and how you survived.
