Sleep Only to Wake
I, morning by morning, lose my whole.
What’s neglected is longed for at wake,
false comfort comes to an end.
It’s clear what I miss.
Will what I dream prevail and fill this hole?
Day after day, fake smiles become one more task,
joy and sorrow forcibly coexist,
comfort’s deficit can be cured by your kiss.
Forever I dream of this eternal pair,
longing for life at your side.
Night, beyond night, it’s constant.
Mute ringing during day dreams is all I hear.
Dream: to taste the sweet pear,
dopamine’s deficit comes clearly,
you’re an addiction: she that I cannot live without.
Life’s blind seeing is what I fear.
Of our stressors, dreams bear the most weight,
falling asleep without you is pointless,
futile attempts without your presence.
What is to come is what we make.
You are softness, warmth, comfort:
lacking discontinuity,
pure applicability.
One day, I will no longer sleep only to wake.
About this poem
Falling into sleep brings a comforting rest, dreams bring hope, fear, sorrow, whatever the mind can muster. Always in the end however, our peace and rest is ended by our inevitable wake.
