Free?
Land of the free
home of the brave
though only if
you fit into the stereotypical views
of the ignorant ones.
Laws passed
to stifle the true original you
stripping away the promise of
We are all created equal.
When did the color of your skin,
loving who they say is wrong,
being born a female
define who you are as a person?
How many more times
will the words
I can't breathe
have to be uttered
to be cried out
for a change to be made?
How can someone
that knows nothing of being a female
dictate what she can and cannot do with her body?
We are not the possession of over age men
who think they know
what is best for us.
My body
My choice
should not be up for debate.
Unless we as women
can dictate laws requiring neutering
of our own counterparts.
When did being who you are
loving who you love
be a crime punishable by death?
As if what someone does
in the privacy of their own home
trickle down and effect other members of society.
Why should someone have to live in fear
to be their own authentic self?
Hiding who they are
hiding who they love.
Being forced to live in a world
a pseudo version of themselves.
The Bible being preached
they hypocrisy of
Love thy neighbor.
Apparently the conditions of this apply
if you're not some
cookie cut mold of who they are.
Being told in not so many words
that if you don't match the ideal
of what they want you to be
that you are beneath them,
a lesser version of who they are.
Less of a human.
I want to live in a world
where love and acceptance
come without conditions,
where who you are does not
make the decision
of the value you have
and the importance
of your being.
One Love as the song rings through
should be the root
of what we all aim to be
and how to live our lives.
Love should be unconditional
not determined by the differences we have.
These differences should be relished and celebrated.
How free are we exactly
when crooked choices are made
by those that have no clue
what it is like to live a life,
the normal life of every day people.
So is it really home of the free?
Or is it home of the free
if you do as they believe
and do as they say?
About this poem
How free are we all exactly? Laws being passed that go after each and everyone of us if we don't match the ideal of others.
