Betjeman would turn in his grave
Come noble Beavers do your worst,
Restore our landscape, it’s been cursed,
Halt this harm, it must be reversed,
Gnaw down this growth!
Come noble Beavers use your might
To bring an end to this dam blight,
Replace what’s wrong with what is right,
Bring back our view!!
Come noble Beavers come and do,
All I have requested of you,
Mop up these stains as sun does dew.
Perfect this scene!!!
Poor Betjeman would shed a tear,
To see come to pass his worst fear,
Mocking his stand both far and near,
Even over his grave!!!!

About this poem
This poem is taken from my first book of poetry ‘let sleeping dogs stand’, published in May 2023. It is written in the style of Betjeman’s poem Slough. Only in my poem the subject is wind turbines springing up like Giant Knotweed. I feel sure that Betjeman would have railed against their imposition on our landscape. Ironically they have sprung close to his grave in Cornwall, England.
