Underground Poet

The underground poet, shy and insecure,
Was asked to read in a big gymnasium
But fear hijacked his voice, made him unsure
He agreed to go only if wine helped him
The crowd fell silent; he began to mess
Up phrases, stammering like a drunken fool

Two bottles down, he was a drunken fool
But surprisingly, his words began to secure
The crowd's attention, cleaning up the mess
The audience listened in the vast gymnasium
His drunkenness was no longer a bother to him
He read with a newly found zeal, no longer unsure

The newfound confidence - he was no longer unsure
Made him forget being a drunken mess
The tribute from fans, they rushed to him
Like the quiet appreciation was suddenly secure
His poetry now slaying in every gymnasium
His words touched hearts without any stress

From the wine-stained pages, he caused no fuss
Now a celebrated poet, once a drunken mess
His sold books had put him in a secure state
A life of readings, no longer unsure
He found solace in big gymnasiums
It all started with a couple of bottles of wine, no one to mess

The underground poet, no longer a drunken mess
His wine-induced words had led to applause and fuss
In every gymnasium, shelves now mirrored his secure
Greatness, the once-unsure poet was no longer a bluff
His talents blossomed, no longer needing wine to secure
Every word spoke, accolades and praises followed him

The once-unsure poet, no longer a drunken mess
Now, every gymnasium was his secure place
His talent was no more a bluff, his fame no longer a fuss

I'm just a regular, blue collar, working stiff who took an interest in writing poetry many years ago but until recently I haven't had a desire to share any with anyone or pursue publication. I'm an unpublished fork lift operator by night, and a day drinker by choice. I can be followed on Twitter @JoeStricklandSC more…
