Silent Homicide
Christina Zipprich 1990 (Illinois)
Before you call him a coward or disgrace his name, before you lift your finger to try to place the blame, before you open your mouth to cast him away, stop and think about the pain he couldn’t escape. He was living each day the best that he could, he didn’t have a demon, maybe you’ve misunderstood. His kids were his everything, they were his life, i bet they wish he was here tonight. But every day he fought this battle, every step felt like a new problem to tackle. Just like you and me he’d wake up each morning, but the ride for him would begin without warning. I won’t let you say he took his own life, how could you know the depth of his fight? Yes we grieve the loss from what has been done, but can’t you see? it wasn’t him — the disease was holding the gun.
About this poem
I wrote this poem for my cousin who had bipolar disorder, he was a father of two, a protector, and never gave up his fight, until that very unfortunate day, he took his life.
