I Want to Smell Roses

Doug Haberman 1959 (Albuquerque, NM)

February 23
Ode

Falling leaves twirling
Northern lights swirling
Crystal waves curling
As they race to the shore

Full moon’s pale presence
Stars in the heavens
Thunder that deafens
Every time that it roars

River that rushes
Snowfall that hushes
Sunrise that touches
Craggy mountains’ high peaks

White clouds that billow
Tears of the willow
Soft sand a pillow
For my oceanside sleep

In the stillness of the night
Right before the early light
As one by one the stars disperse
I express my gratitude
For the beauty of the universe

I want to smell roses
Their scent on the breeze
I want to hear birdsong
Afloat in the trees
I want to feel sunlight
Warming my skin
I find peace in Nature
Again and again
I find peace in Nature
Again and again
