DIALYSIS

Kimberly Powers 1979 (Cambridge)

As I sit in a recliner waiting for about 4 hours
Time reflects in my mind of running
The beeping sounds of the machine
because my catheter is having trouble working.
I watch TV or listen to music on my tablet
Uplifting sounds in my headphones
Meditate my mind and soul.
Can't wait until it's time to go home.
My idpn they feed through my iv
In ten minutes my session will be over
The nurses get the antibiotics ready
Usually this is where I vomit.
My blood is all cleaned with rinse back
My blood pressure gets checked.
If it's good I get to go home.
Sometimes my BP drops too low
My symptoms are bright lights
and can't hear out of my earlobes
I wait for my ride to have my wheelchair
lifted onto the van
Right foot where all the toes just got amputated
I feel constant pain. There's a hole where blood has been leaking for seven months ever since the surgery. Escar on top and bottom at the heel of my foot.
There's a bone sticking out and it's going to take forever if it becomes good.
Used to be independent
Now I'm depending.
Feel like a burden to my family and friends
Try to be strong, but I can't wait for the end.

Kimberly Powers

Today is my 5th year aniversary of being on dialysis. Hopefully this reaches anyone coping with what I've been going through. Just to let you know, you're not alone. Because I know it gets depressing, but if you interact with other patients at your center and talk about struggles you will feel better and so will others. Make new friends and try to stay calm and have fun with making the most of the situation. more…
