First Sight

October’s blazing foliage wanes as daylight’s dwindling rays trickle through the stained glass,
Vibrant colors dance across the sanctuary, searching for a place to rest before the night steals their fervor,
They whirl and flutter, catching your face with their light as they disappear with the sinking sun,
My past, present, and future juxtaposed with a single glimpse of your countenance,
Aglow with a light that wraps its plunging beams into my unsuspecting soul,
The music plays and all is washed away by the organ’s resounding waves, until only you remain.

The page is turned. The colors glide across its empty space, eager to write the next chapter,
The tale of a girl teetering on the brink of adulthood, unfamiliar with Cupid’s sweet and sudden sting,
Yet, now, his arrow enchants, beckoning with a force too powerful to overcome,
And despite the shadows of the vanishing light, my eyes are transfixed, my heart thumping to a curious new rhythm,
I go forward, stumbling toward the inevitable, my solitary past behind me and my future blazing brightly with unity.

The August sun peeks through the stained glass, once again casting a myriad of colors across the sanctuary,
Inside a rustic seaside chapel bells vigorously proclaim the joyous sounds of matrimony,
Shrouded in white, I walk the aisle to your heart and two lives are merged as one,
Amidst the stillness of the congregation, we sow the garden upon which three tiny seeds will flourish and grow.

A little boy scurries along a dewy shore endeavoring to catch the golden ball in the sky,
He reaches for the heavens, I blink, the little boy disappears, replaced by a young man with his father’s likeness,
His dark green eyes gaze upon two wispy haired girls chasing butterflies and tumbling in the grass,
The young man swiftly swoops his sisters into his arms, joining in their chorus of laughter,
I watch them as the sun sinks low in the sky, only its soft yellow glow remains,
My eyes are moist and dim because I know, of the brimming power of love at first sight.

I am the granddaughter of a woman who revered poetry, verse and prose. She inspired me to use language like brushstrokes on a painter's canvas. It is my hope that her love for the written word lives on in my three children. more…
