The River's Song
Jefferson Mutembei 1990 (Nairobi)
The river sings a song, so soft and low,
Of places it has been, and rivers it does know.
It whispers of the mountains, and the valleys far below.
With every gentle breeze, it tells a tale,
Of forests and the fields, the nightingales that trail,
And all the beauty that the earth doth yield.
It speaks of love, of life, and of mankind,
Of all the joys, and all the tears, it bears in mind,
And of the journey that it takes, so free and unconfined.
So let us listen to the river's song,
And all the tales it tells, with joy and with a calm,
And learn from it, so wise, and yet so warm.
