Pretty decent load of beef, I guess

Doug Blair 1951 (London)

The beef are all
Pretty sturdy.
Vet gave the shots.
All but one submitted.
She kicked, bellowed
And double-crossed
The backfield.
Weight gain seems promising.
Bought em six weeks back.
Keep for four more.
Watching market prices
Hawk-like.
Then Karl comes
With the transport.
Up the chute.
Gone to slaughter
In Toronto.
Maple Leaf Meats.
Not just Hog-town, folks.
Do I feel anything?
Remorse? Guilt?
Embarrassment?
Nope.
But there is one…female.
She ran from Vet’s needle.
She always trotted over.
For me.
For petting and communion.
At the fence.
When I had a moment.
Think we’ll hold her back.
Give Karl the details.
One less to scream, shit
And submit.

About this poem

Will undoubtedly please the Vegetarians. But I like my ground chuck. And eye of the round.
