Don't take away my light
My life was of pain and regret.
A heart emersed in darkness and anguish.
What love was, I never knew.
I walked the streets in the cold.
Stole to feed my hungry mouth.
Robbed just for a day's survival.
The road was dark and empty.
And covered in thick thorny bushes.
Once I stepped on one,
But there was none I could turn to.
Friends left for I dragged them behind.
I yearned for a glimmer of hope.
As I sold off myself to the wild.
That I might be reaped but at least I was still alive.
I cared not about others.
Assaulting my way through life.
And turning my back on all.
But you brought that glimmer of hope.
Pulled me up from the rabbles.
Offered me life and love.
Clothed, fed and made who I am today.
You shined light into my dark soul.
Why then take away that light now, calling me a degenerate.
I know I wasn't fit for you
But you still took me and believed I was.
Through the eyes of the sparrows did you show the world to me.
Took me to the heavens and I was counted among the lucky.
Your friends and family have now known me.
For you brought the lamp to my face
And Proclaimed to the world of my beauty.
About this poem
The persona is a woman who has lived her entire life alone on the streets. Knowing only the darker side of life, she is found by a man who takes her in and brings light in her life. But again the man turns away from the woman and now she complains.
