The one that got away?

My messenger reassures me about the encrypted chat room,
that I could talk my heart out and it will be safe.
But it has conveniently ignored the human factor, “you”
that ached my heart for days.

I would go to bed today,
knowing you didn’t text me when you could.
Even though you promised you’d return,
I would realize that I misunderstood.

My friends thought I deserve better,
better conversation, behaviour and a love that will last.
But in my heart, I know
that you gave it all to me in the past.

Whenever I ask the universe about you,
it tells me to keep my hopes high.
But as the days turn into weeks,
my yearning for your attention slowly dies.

You had many chances to prove my friends wrong
But you acted as they said
I hated that they were right
I should have listened to them instead

I no longer wish to meet you on my train,
Or hear your voice.
But whenever July brings its rains,
It makes me aware of the void.

— why can’t moving on be linear?

Katyayani Kaushik

Katyayani is an old soul and has a child-like heart. She enjoys observing and romanticising life; it's her way of living. You should see how her eyes light up when she talks about Mohenjodaro and Ashokan history. She is interested in self-improvement and is still striving to become her higher self. Her comforts include Shayari, Dilli, and Sangeet. She personifies what it is to be human. more…
