Lament of Dhritarashtra

Hundred children mine lie floating
Upon Death's oblivious waters,
Slain by the Battle's horrid raging,
All my love  is robbed by Slaughters,

Where shall I go with my aged queen?
For there is none to light our pyre
What does the glory of sword-sheen?
When the diadem is lost in warfare

I am upon Mother Earth a burden,
Condemned to carry the agonizing Walk,
My flower-like children are driven,
To Underworld's ember-bulk

What have I lost! O mother!
I am now in truth a blind father!

About this poem

Dhristarashtra was a king mentioned in the far-famed Hindu epic Mahabharata. He had a hundred sons, but all of them died in the battle of Kurukshetra, for they were thought evil by God Himself. I do not have sympathy for them, but the thought of their father mourning fills my imagination with a poetic sense. A father's deep love for his children is the theme of this poem. It may be absurd for the modern times, but Love cannot be limited by the narrow confines of Time, it transcends all. I think it unjust that Dhirtarashtra should have felt the agonizing effect of the misdeeds of his sons.
