WAS IT KNOWLEDGE OR NATURE?

WAS IT KNOWLEDGE OR NATURE?

I lift up my hand                                                                                                                                                                                                                        To get hold of any help from the surface                                                                                                     But the more I reach for them, the more I watch them oar afar                                                           They neither respond to a call nor pay heed to a yell                                                                                       I could see the smile of loneliness and hear the giggles of sorrow

I turned left; I turned to my right                                                                                                                                Whilst I drown in misery                                                                                                                                                I’ve lost my life from what is called life                                                                                                       Was it education or the river?                                                                                                                                        None can tell, for they connived.

In the quest for knowledge,                                                                                                                                                                    I’ve left everything behind                                                                                                                                         It has given me a bitter gift                                                                                                                                                    The Pandora’s Box, I say                                                                                                                                                      Has drowned me in agony.

About this poem

The poem was written because of a situation that happened in my country (Ghana). Students, during school hours, we're sent by the teacher to go and work on his farm. The students had to cross a river so they took a canoe. But unfortunately, the canoe capsized and they died. I was saddened by everything that surrounded the death of the young aspirants. The key to success has brought them to what is called life to snatch their lives from them in hard way. Education: the key to success Water: life But they (the students) were killed by water.
